Introduction
2/3 of the hospitals in Norway are already using, or will be using RIS and PACS within the next years. By the end of 2005 nearly all the hospitals in Norway will have RIS and PACS installed. From January 1st 2002 all hospitals in Norway are state owned. They are organised in five regions with separate boards and a managing director for each region. The Hospitals will be operated as Health Enterprises. The regions are establishing intra-regional broadband communication, and within 2003 all the Regional Health Network will communicate in a National Health Network.

In this article we will give a brief overview of RIS/PACS in Norway, with examples from the Mid-Norway region with broadband PACS, from North Norway where Teleradiology was pioneered, and finally a discussion for the future:
  • National plans for standardisation, communication and integration (National mirror group of IHE)
  • Organisational aspects, workflow, profit realisation and cost/benefit-analyses
  • Safety, patient information security and security in the multi-hospital network-based PACSsystem
